What is Virginia Energy Choice?

As of January 1, 2002, Virginia Energy Choice allows you to choose the company that generates, or supplies, your electricity. Energy Choice is the result of a Virginia law that separates your supply of electricity from its delivery, and opens the supply portion to competition.

Before Energy Choice, Allegheny Power supplied all of your electricity and delivered it to your home or business along its network of power lines. This electric service was regulated by state and federal agencies, which controlled the prices you were charged.

Under Energy Choice, you will be free to shop for an electricity supplier the way you shop for other goods and services. You can compare offers and choose the one that best suits your needs. Allegheny Power will continue to deliver your electricity safely and reliably, even if you choose another supplier.

Electricity suppliers must be certified by the Virginia State Corporation Commission before they can sell you electricity. This is to ensure that they are qualified to do business in Virginia. Competition among suppliers may result in lower prices or the introduction of new products and services into the marketplace.
