Frequently Asked Questions

What is Virginia Energy Choice and what am I supposed to do?
Virginia Energy Choice is the result of a state law that separates your electric service into two parts: (1) the supply of electricity that is generated in a power station and (2) its delivery to your home or business along power lines. Beginning January 1, 2002, the law allows you to shop for the company that supplies your electricity and make a choice, based on price or any other factor that is important to you.

Does that mean I have to choose a new power company?
No. You can do nothing and continue to receive your electricity from Allegheny Power. If you want, however, you may shop for lower prices or other services.

How would I know if these new electricity suppliers are reputable companies?
All suppliers of electricity have to be approved and licensed by the Virginia State Corporation Commission before they can offer service in the state.

If I sign up with a new supplier, who would I call to report a power interruption?
You would still call Allegheny Power, which will deliver your electricity safely and reliably, even if you choose another supplier. Allegheny Power will continue to maintain the poles, wires, and equipment that bring electricity to your house, and will continue to provide services such as meter reading and billing.

Why should I shop for a new supplier?
You might save money or be eligible for new products and services. The price you are currently paying Allegheny Power for generation - your "price to compare" - will soon be printed on your electric bill. If another supplier offers you a price that is lower than your price to compare, you will probably save money on your electric bill.

If I decide to switch to a new supplier, what should I do?
You should contact the supplier directly and sign up for service. Be sure you understand fully any terms and conditions the supplier may require before you sign a contract for service. The supplier will then contact Allegheny Power and tell us that you have switched.

With all this competition in the marketplace, are there still laws to protect me as a consumer?
Yes. You are protected against abuses in the marketplace such as "slamming," which is switching you to a new supplier without your permission.
