Maryland Compact Fluorescent Light Energy Efficiency Program

Change a Light Pledge Button

Allegheny Power is launching new conservation initiatives designed to help Maryland residential customers better manage their energy usage and save on energy bills.

The two “fast-track” program components, approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission, include the residential compact fluorescent lighting program and energy awareness campaign.

The objective of the lighting program is to produce an immediate change that results in energy and demand savings benefits for customers. Allegheny will mail each of its approximately 220,000 residential customers two, 13-watt compact fluorescent lights (CFL) to install in their homes.

CFLs are revolutionizing lighting—they use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. Allegheny anticipates that customers will see an average monthly savings of about $1 over the life of the new bulbs. The energy awareness campaign will provide customers with information regarding the benefits of energy conservation and efficiency.

We are providing these compact fluorescent lights (CFL) as a part of the ENERGY STAR® Change a Light, Change the World Campaign. This campaign is a national call-to-action from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to encourage every individual to help change the world - one light at a time.

If all the households in Maryland changed just one incandescent light bulb to a CFL bulb, the combined individual efforts would have the following impacts:

  • Maryland could save up to 107 million kilowatt-hours of
electricity per year. This is enough energy to light all the
households in Annapolis for 3.3 years.
  • Based on the average electric rates in Maryland, the amount
of energy saved would reduce household electric bills by a
combined total of $8.9 million a year.
  • Maryland would also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 169
million pounds per year. This is equivalent to removing 15,000
    cars from the road.
