Net Metering
|
Net Metering is available to Allegheny Power customers who install renewable fuel generators such as solar, wind, hydro, or biomass sources. Through operation in parallel with Allegheny Power’s electrical system, we are able to measure the "net" difference between the energy generated by the customer and the energy purchased from Allegheny. |
The term Net Metering refers to the fact that the meter can measure the flow of electricity in two directions. It measures how much energy comes from Allegheny Power versus the renewable generator’s electricity production. The generator can offset a customer’s electric energy usage with any excess electricity produced. As the generator system produces electricity, the kilowatt-hours are first used to meet the customer’s electric requirements such as lighting and appliances. If more electric energy is produced from the system than the customer needs, the additional kilowatt-hours are measured, fed into the utility’s electric system and utilized by other customers.
When the monthly electric bill is calculated, if the customer uses more electrical energy than is generated, the customer pays only for the net kilowatt-hours (kWh). If the customer generates more electrical energy than is used from the utility electrical system, then customer the customer receives a kWh credit, which is applied to future bills. In addition, the customer is required to pay any Customer Charges and minimums applicable under their rate schedule.

Requirements for Net Metering
- An application for generation interconnection must be submitted to Allegheny Power prior to generation connection.
- Generation must meet specifications per Net Meter Tariff. Refer to your state's Net Metering Tariff for details on generator capacity and renewable generator source.
- Generation equipment must meet utility and product safety and grid interactive interconnection specifications. For example, an external disconnect is required within 10 feet of Allegheny meter location.
- Electrical inspection is required before energizing generation interconnection. For a list of electrical inspectors, click here.
- After electrical inspection, a new net meter will be installed by Allegheny Power. A performance test will be completed to verify that generator source is disabled in the event of a loss of power from the electric utility source.

- Generation equipment must meet utility and product safety grid-interactive interconnection specifications. Typically, electrical equipment used for grid-interactive interconnection will be tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory and carry a marking label stating the equipment is Underwriters Laboratory (UL) 1741 grid-interactive compliant. Refer to Interconnection Guidelines AP19-35 for technical specifications for generation size less than 2 MW. For systems larger than 2MW, please consult with an Allegheny Power Business Account Specialist.

Pennsylvania Customers Only:
In addition to the above:
- A Pennsylvania Level 1 or Level 2 Application is required. The Level 1 application is for inverter based systems up to 10KW. The Level 2 Application is for all other connections.
- The application is divided in two parts. Part 1 is to be completed prior to the generator installation and Part 2 is to be completed after installation. The application is to be returned to the Lines Engineering Designer at local service center.
